If you stop and think for just a minute, I'm sure you can see the potential for disaster when it comes to wedding speech jokes. After all, we are talking about a wedding, something that will hopefully only happen once for the happy couple. It's a single day, a single event. There's no redo, and there's no taking back anything that happens.
It's not that you can not use any jokes in your wedding speech – in fact humor is one of the most important components of the very best toasts and speeches. But you have to be very careful exactly what jokes you make and how you deliver them. There is so much emotion and pressure for an event of a lifetime that you can not help but take it seriously.
First there's the risk to yourself. If you tell a joke that does not go off well, you could be left feeling quite embarrassed. Maybe no one found it funny but you paused for laughter. There's that uncomfortable silence, but magnified by a hundred times what it would normally be. Just imagine grandma staring at you like you're some kind of fool.
Secondly there's the bigger risk, the risk of offending someone. There's family all over the place, many of what may have a very different sense of humor than you do. The wrong joke could set off a firestorm. Who wants to deal with that kind of mess on what is supposed to be a happy occasion?
No, wedding speech jokes are not to be approached casually. They need to be carefully researched, planned, and executed. That may seem too stiff and formal, but this is not an area in which you want to be taking chances.
