Writing a Best Man's Speech

[ad_1]

Writing a best man speech can be a daunting task and it is the part of the role that most people dread. Well the good news is that writing a best man speech does not need to be a terrifying experience. If you have already started to worry about the sound of your knocking knees, let me assure you very few people are born public speakers. Guests at the wedding do not expect a side-splitting performance by a professional comedian. They will be expecting you to tell a few amusing stories and make some sincere complements. The best mans speech should last no more than five minutes and this is a very short amount of time when you consider your overall best man duty.

The key to writing a best man speech is to planning and preparation. You should start your draft around six weeks before the date of the wedding. This will give you sufficient time for your research and to find the stories which will have the groom shaking with fear. You should aim to work your draft into a final speech around a week before the wedding. I recommend using the time you have available to practice your speech. To improve your confidence you can practice in front of a mirror, or try presenting your speech to a few close friends. This will also give you the chance to gauge if your level of humor is about right.

The best man speech should be structured into three sections; the beginning, middle and end. The beginning is the section where you thank the groom for his toast on behalf of the bridesmaids and for selecting you to be the best man. At this point you may wish to add some humor about how you were the obvious choice or how you met the groom. The middle section contains most of your material and will consist of a few short stories to entertain the guests at the grooms expense. The secret is to keep your stories short and to the point. During this section of the speech the groom expects to take a bit of a batter but keep it in context and finish with a complement to the groom for being a good sport. The final part of the speech should contain a sincere complement to the bride and ends with a best man wedding toast to the bride and groom and their future.

One thing not to forget is your speech should accommodate the audience as a whole. Wedding speeches are one of the most anticipated parts of the day and a standing ovation from the audience, not the bride and groom, is the measure of success. A top tip for audience participation is to identify a competent of guests that you can refer to within your speech. Make sure you know where they will be sitting and make eye contact as you mention their names. This technique ensures that guests feel included and I would advise you to use it when writing a best mans speech.
