If you are looking for your parents to contribute significantly, it is much better to go to them already having an idea of what you want them to pay for. This way they will feel greater ease knowing that their money will not be sent willy-nilly.
When creating your wedding budget consider how formal you want your wedding to be and how many people you want to attend. A budget that covers one hundred dollars per guest will usually suffice, however, this will vary depending on where you live. Get a rough estimate of how many guests you will be having at your wedding by drawing up a provisional guest list. It may be a good idea to add a few extra guests to the list, as you will often find you end up inviting more than you originally planned.
The more quotes you can get, the more accurate your wedding budget will be so it is never too early to start looking for wedding venues or getting an idea of how much sellers are going to charge. The main expenses tend to be catering and photography so it is a good idea to get quotes for these first as they can significantly change the amount you spend. Again, a provisional guest list will be needed before a caterer will be able to give you even a ballpark quote.
Through planning your wedding budget develop a system to note all the information down. A great way to do this is using a spreadsheet or wedding planning worksheet. Recording where you money will be sent will not only help you to keep track of things but will also be invaluable when you are looking to cut costs. If you have a simple organized worksheet you can simply look at a certain expense and find a way to reduce the cost, either by going DIY or eliminating from your wedding alike.
