What Makes a 'Good' Wedding Planner?

[ad_1]

My wife is a big fan of the movie "White Christmas" with Bing Crosby. She has watched it so many times through the years that she can point out film errors that the rest of us miss. There is one particular scene where Danny K has a cast on his arm, and when the camera switches views, he no longer has the cast. Most of you were probably not aware of this (and sometimes wish you did not know even now!). The same goes for your event. Things go wrong all the time, but with the right planner, you will not notice a single change and the show will go on.

I have worked with many different planners through the years and from a vendor perspective, I can tell you that they are all extremely different. Some planners are simply planners by default. They planned "my friend's wedding" and therefore they are now planners. There are others that have been in the industry for years and have many accolades and certificates to their credit.

What makes one different from another? What should a "good" planner look like?

Well here are some things that you can look for in a good planner.

1. Time Management: A good planner will always be on time or early. I know this looks elementary, but do not take it lightly if your planner is late to a meeting. This is sometimes a reflection of their time management skills.

2. Organization: Good planners are organized. This does not mean that they can find the notes that they wrote on the napkin somewhere in their purse. Organized means they are experts at gathering thousands of documents and combining them into something easily managed in a book or computer program. Beware if your planner is scatter-brained. Organization is the key to a successful event.

3. Prepared: Good planners are prepared with extra floor plans for your sellers, a clear list of vendors and contact numbers, an emergency kit for the bride, and some duct tape (ok, maybe not duct tape).

4. Communication: A good planner knows how to communicate with everyone involved including irate guests.

5. Committed to You: A good planner surrounds herself / himself with quality vendors that they TRUST. This allows them to simply orchestrate the process from beginning to end without pushing their own agenda and opinion. This is the major difference between good and bad planners. This is your wedding, you need YOUR vision to be displayed, not the vision of your planner. Good planners will always make sure to guard your vision and help you communicate that to vendors.

When you only have one time to do it right, always use a planner, it will be worth every penny.
