For the bride and groom that does not have hundreds of thousands of dollars to spend on a wedding – is there a way to have a gorgeous wedding and not look cheap? Absolutely! It's all about knowing where to put your money to get the largest bang for your buck.

You will need to have a very clear picture of what the two of you want. This is a very important step and should be done when the two of you sit down, by yourself, and discuss what is most important to the two of you. If you do not have a clear picture you will easily get up in all the emotional decisions that come your way. Who to have in your wedding? The size of the guest list, and how much did you let the sales lady talk you into spending on your wedding gown. A clear direction and an exact amount that you want to spend will keep you from many of the expensive pitfalls.

Fairy tale dreams are fine when you are a child, but if you feel that this day is all about you – you need to grow up. It's about the two of you and you both need equal say and determine what is important and what is over priced indulgence. Maturing and keeping your wallet in mind will see you both through your married life.

Make a list of what are the most important things to each of you. Compare and have a very good talk. Compromise whenever possible, and keep in mind that the end result is that you are married, not that you are up for entertainer of the year. If one of you is too insistent about always getting their own way – this could be an indication of what is ahead in your married life. Marriage is a great institution; it's the participants that are flawed.

Another reason a wedding budget gets blown to bits is pressure from others. If you had friends that got married and blew a bundle on their wedding – do not feel you need to compete. Keeping your own personal finances in check will be a discipline that will keep you in good stead for your whole life – keeping up with the Jones will see you broke, in debt, and weary of endless calls from creditors – one of the major promises marriages failure. Another pressure point can be your parents. Many moms and dads have saddled their children with debt by going overboard, inviting hundreds of business associates, neighbors, and anyone else they want to impress. If you're old enough to get married, you're old enough to reign in your budget.

How to make your vision a reality:

The most important factor is where to hold your event. Renting two spaces eats up a lot of cash, so try to find one place to hold both the ceremony and reception. You will need tables and chairs, a working kitchen, restrooms, and electricity. Also remember accessibility for any handicap guest, and plenty of parking.

Ask around for people who plan large events – you'll find these people at churches, fire halls and organizations like the VFW. They have info that could take you months to find. If you find one that comes highly recommended – offer a fee to help coordinate your wedding. These people have far more experience with working within a budget than most so called wedding planners. Many wedding planners have a hard time thinking inexpensive.

Find a place that lets you bring in your own food and beverage. When you have control you really rack up savings. If you are concerned about people drinking too much employ a bar tender – this really could be a life saver.

Plan a cheaper menu. Food and beverage is where you will spend the most money. Think BBQ, Italian, pig roast, or employ an excellent cook from among your acquaints. Remember experience counts here – do not use anyone who has never done a big event.

Music on a laptop with someone acting as DJ will save a lot money, just choose the right songs. Many songs are nice, but are not 'danceable', check the internet for the best dance music. You'll need some sound equipment, and a microphone. Make sure the person is organized enough to completely handle this responsibility.

Be a comparison shopper. A few phone calls can save you quite a bit, and become a bargainer – tell the person you have X amount of dollars to spend – can they do it for that price or not? If they can not try someone else.

Skip what does not matter. Over priced invitations are a waste, designer dresses costing thousands just end up in a dress bag in the back of your closet. Limos may be impressive, but they are expensive. Question the things that you think you really need. If they are important shop around to get the best bang for your buck.

Wedding gowns can be bought off the sale rack, or through ads on line. Purchase a veil at a craft store that issues 40% – 50% off coupons. Basic black tuxes are found for pennies on the dollar at thrift stores, or go with a suit that can be worn again.

Keep the perspective that this is an important day, a special day, but not the only great day. Your married life will hold many special days, just make sure that you are not over burdened by debt so that you can enjoy them.
