Your wedding is probably the largest celebration you will plan, and staging it at the right venue is vital to make it a day to remember. You have to be comfortable and relaxed in your choice, safe in the knowledge that your venue is up to the job and the staff trustworthy and capable. With so many wedding avenues around, what things should you consider in deciding which one will host your celebration and help make those special memories?
Booking – How Far in Advance?
Try to book your wedding as soon as you can. Six months to a year is the norm. The most popular time of year for weddings is April to August, so remember the adage "book early to avoid disappointment", especially if you have your heart set on a particular place. This is also important if you want to have your wedding in a certain location and within a certain budget.
Working with a Budget
Weddings are expensive so the first thing to do is set a budget and try to stick to it. There are always hidden costs and essential items mount up so, although the venue, meal and drinks will inevitably take the lion's share of your budget, do not allocate more than you can afford. Always work within your means and try to get the best value for your money. People want to have the wedding they want, but often money gets in the way. Try thinking of ways to work around this. DIY favors, for example, and always shop around for the best prices.
Talk to venues' wedding directors. Ask them what's included in the price. Are there extra costs for table decorations, room decoration, tables, chairs and linen, special diet meals? Or, if staying at a hotel, are room rates discounted for guests?
Location, Location, Location
Most weddings are two part affairs. There's the ceremony and the reception, most often in different locations. If your wedding is in two different locations, consider the distance between ceremony and reception venues and how easy it is to travel. If it is far, some guests may not be able to get to the reception after the ceremony, and you may have to provide transport, eating into your budget. Also, think about photographs. Does your reception venue have a picturesque setting, a nearby park or perspective, for example?
Venue Facilities
Always get a full list of a reception facilities and tick them off if they match your needs. Your initial decision will be based on the number of guests. Can the venue accommodate the number of expected guests? Although it's your big day, always consider your guests. Does the venue have disabled access? Are there adequate toilet and changing facilities? Is there adequate parking? What room and table decorations are available? The list is long, but any good wedding reception venue will provide full details and should provide everything you need for the perfect wedding.
