Those of you in parts of the country that are still covered in show might find this hard to imagine, but the weather here in beautiful Destin Florida has really been great this week.
The beaches are as gorgeous as always, only there is slightly less of the pure white sand showing now that our lovely beachfront is covered with a smatttering of brightly colored towels, blankets, and bikini bottoms.
Everywhere I look I see license plates from all over. Lots of them are from Tennessee, and some are from relatively far away places like New York or Indiana. Even Quebec is represented very well here this Spring break. It's clear the area is becoming popular with people who are fed up with seemingly unending winters.
The local grocery stores are already hawking their multi colored indoor tubes and floats. It's good to know the seasonal economy is off to a good start after the sleepy Winter lull.
Of course it's easy to understand why everyone is coming this year. Let's face it. It has been a really rough winter for most folks on the continent and Destin is one of the best Spring Break destinations on the Gulf coast.
With Spring break come some of the things we residents do not really enjoy as much. Traffic becomes a nuisance, and so does parking. All of our favorite nightspots and restaurants suddenly come alive and they are attractive nightly lines to get in without you go early … or late.
Spring Breakers love nightlife, so for all you Spring Breakers out visiting Destin, I thought I'd add a couple of my favorite hotspots to this article just for you.
First Up is AJ's on the harbor. During the day it's a terrific harbor front restaurant and bar with a great view and classic Southern favorites like po 'boys and fish tacos.
By night it transforms into one of Destin's favorite dancing hotspots for young people. You can dance the night away with the hottest DJs in town and it's a great place to meet new friends.
Another devoted and extremely popular party nightspot for the college and younger crowd is NightTown, which is not on the water but is only about 2 blocks away and walking distance from AJ's.
NightTown has huge parties and all-you-can-drink events and they offer low cover charge dance nights. They also have great contests like bikini contests and wet T-shirt contests.
While there is always a party to be found when you come to town, one of the very best things about Destin is that it is not just another party town.
Destin is mostly visited by families and if you are interested in a more family or all-ages oriented atmosphere, considering spending the afternoon hanging out at Harry T's on the Harbor or Jimmy Buffet's Margaritaville which just opened up a few weeks ago.
This is also the time of year when lots of couples come here to have romantic Destin Florida beach weddings. You might see some blushing brides testing the waters if you come here in the next month or two. Getting married right on the beach is most common, but you can also go on a custom wedding-cruise or have your wedding at one of the special venues in the area.
